The University Recreation Center, along with the Office for Advocacy & Violence Prevention (OVAP), hosted “Creating a Safer Campus Together: Boundaries, Safety, and Power” awareness tabling event last Thursday at the UREC Mezzanine on the Edinburg campus.
Representatives from campus police and the Office of Title IX & Equal Opportunity were present to answer questions and provide information in regards to safety resources on campus.
Associate Director of Special Programs for the OAVP, Priscilla Palacios, said the tabling events goal was to make students aware of campus support services.
UTRGV Police Officer Marco Huerta also participated, highlighting safety tools available to students, including the Campus Shield app.
“They have at their fingertips by their phones, and they’ll be able to have contact with the police department, if they need to in urgency,” Huerta said.
Title IX & Equal Opportunity Staff member Claire Hsieh also shared information about its role on campus and how it assists students.
“We are an office that helps with investigations and things related to reports of discrimination and sexual misconduct,” Hsieh said.
Organizers say events like these are designed to encourage students to ask questions, learn about boundaries and understand where to seek help.
