Power in pink event at the UREC Diego Montano/Vaquero Radio
UTRGV’s University Recreation hosted Power in Pink on Thursday, October 8, bringing students and members of the university community together in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The event featured high-energy cardio activities designed to promote physical wellness while raising awareness about breast cancer and the importance of prioritizing health.
Director of University Recreation, Calvin Diggs, said the event attracted a significant number of participants.
“I think the last time I heard when they scanned in, it was almost 200 people that had scanned in,” Diggs said.
Power in Pink also provided an opportunity for attendees to connect with university wellness staff and advocates while participating in activities centered on health community support.
Facility manager at University Recreation, Fernando Lam, said encouraging people to prioritize their health is a key part of the event.
“We want to make sure that everyone gets the help that they need and take it as a priority, just like any other thing in life. Health is just as important for everyone else,” Lam said.
For students, the event also served as a reminder of the importance of understanding how common breast cancer is and bringing attention to the disease among younger generations.
Junior majoring in Bilingual and Childhood Education, Angeline Hernandez, said events like Power in Pink can help college students become more informed.
“I feel like breast cancer, where it just kind of goes unnoticed as in how common it actually is. So I think us having this event brings a lot of awareness to college students,” Hernandez said.
Power in Pink was open to students, faculty, staff and the UTRGV community, with an exclusive event T-shirts offered
