It’s the Halloween season and the UTRGV Student Union has already begun the celebration by hosting the Scary Storytelling event held last Wednesday via Zoom and featured the different stories of students and staff who have experienced spooky happenings.

Bilingual Education Junior Adriana Nava works at the Student Union and recounts her harrowing experience at work on the UTRGV Edinburg campus.

“We used to have a co-worker…and we never spoke to her about any of the paranormal things that would happen at the union,” Nava said. “One day, she just saw this little figure; there was a little girl in the back of her in one of the bathrooms.”

According to Nava, this isn’t the first time a little girl is mentioned, as the Student Union is supposedly haunted by her.

Despite the acknowledgment of the Student Union hauntings, other spine-chilling accounts were told through the Zoom chat, such as the story of Psychology Junior Francisca Flores.

“There was one time where I was lying down in my bed ready to go to sleep… I heard some knocks on my window,” Flores said in the Zoom chat. “I ignored them… Next thing you know, someone is pulling my blanket. I pulled it back towards me… I turned on my flashlight and NO ONE WAS THERE.”

Event Manager for the Student Union Mabel Cortina-Matos says that these activities are meant to bring the campus community together and encourages students to participate in similar events.

“We hope that [students] are finding people that share their same interests and that they’re finding those avenues to engage with [the] campus,” Cortina-Matos said.

Although the Scary Storytelling event happened last week, students can still participate in the Halloween Costume Contest by submitting a photo of themselves wearing a costume to the UTRGV Student Union’s social media accounts or email before Wednesday.
