Celebrating Halloween traditionally such as trick-or-treating is not an option right now due to the ongoing pandemic but Campus Activities Board has several events planned this week in celebration of the spooky season.

CAB will be hosting Virtual Halloween Escape Room from 9 to 10 p.m. Thursday in which students will have to escape an elevator shaft.

CAB Culture Committee Chair Alejandra Santos said the board wanted to have unique events for Halloween.

“We didn’t want to do something that we usually do, like a movie, like gaming, concert… We didn’t want students to just be looking at a screen and not really [be] interacting. We’ve been able to see that through escape rooms, students are able to like get their hearts beating, they all have to interact together as a team for the goal of escaping.”

Santos said the event is a first-come, first-serve basis to the first 50 students that RSVP on VLink.

“It’s going to be split for 25 students in one, and the other one is going to have [the] other 25 students once they are in, we are going to be providing a special website,” she said. “So, basically, all the students are going to be talking if they want, like it’s mostly preferred for it to be on voice. … They don’t have a microphone, so they can also be putting things in the chat and there will be a moderator if things get a little bit too hard, if students don’t know what to do, that’s an easy way for students to be able to get help.”

Campus Activities Board is also hosting Pumpkin Carving Competition happening now.

CAB After-Dark Committee Chair Alejandra Ramirez said the competition is usually hosted on campus but due to COVID-19, it was decided to gather submissions from students.

“A lot of students may have already carved their own pumpkins at home with their families or, you know, their friends,” Ramirez said. “The way that it works pretty much as that we’re just collecting submissions of students, collecting their information. They can direct message through our social media platforms.”

She said the submissions will be posted on CAB’s Facebook page and winners will be selected via likes. First place will win $75 in VBucks, second place will get $50 in VBucks and third will receive UTRGV Swag.

The deadline for submission is Oct. 28 and the voting time period will be from Oct. 29 through the 31st.
