Anchor lede-in: A local band made up of UTRGV students brings its music and energy to the Rio Grande Valley. News Director Emilio Suarez with the story
Citrus Dream combines indie rock and shoegaze influences with guitars, bass and drums.
Singer and rhythm guitar players Miqueas Alvarez said the band formed after he met Daniel Morales and introduced him to the bass. Alvarez later met Zafenath Garcia, and the two began playing music together. The group met Christopher Razo after moving into the dorms, where he worked as a resident assistant.
The four members eventually became close friends through their time playing together.
Alvarez said the band members have built a strong friendship over the past two years.
“We’ve become each other’s best friends,” Alvarez said.
The band members also balance their music with their studies at UTRGV. Razo is a medical student, while Morales studies mechanical engineering.
Drum Player Christopher Razo said managing school and music requires two important factors.
“It comes down to time management, right?” Razo said. “And being very disciplined”
The RGV also influences Citrus Dream’s sound. The members grew up listening to different types of music, including Spanish-language music, classic rock, alternative rock and jazz.
The band’s different musical backgrounds help shape its sound.
Guitar Player Zafenath Garcia said each member brings different musical influences to the group.
“We each pull from different areas of music.” Garcia said “We’re not all kind of like in an echo chamber.”
The band will perform from 7 to 11 p.m. Oct. 16 at Carnival of Madness on the Brownsville Student Union Lawn at UTRGV. Alvarez said the group plans to bring two things to the stage.
“You can expect a lot of fun, a lot of energy,” Alvarez said.
