The long-awaited basketball court at the Pedro “Pete” Benavides Park is to be ready by next week for the community to use.
It has been six months since the Cameron County Officials announced the building of a new covered basketball court at the groundbreaking ceremony on Feb. 17.
According to the Cameron County Regional Mobility Authority (CCRMA) website, Cameron County and the CCRMA worked together to build the sports court for the improvement of the community in Precinct 1.
Pickup general contracting supervisor Tony Lopez, who was working on the construction site, said the expected rain later this week might delay progress on the project. The basketball court is estimated to be completed sometime next week.
The finishing touches for the construction of the basketball court are being made, Lopez said. The columns of the covered court received their first coat of paint on Aug. 10, and the downspouts for the roof were installed Aug. 11.
Vaquero Radio was unable to get ahold of County Commissioner Sofia Benavides to get a comment about the basketball court inauguration date.
