Twice a year fashion week takes place in Paris France, but this time around, local women from the Rio Grande Valley took the 12-hour flight across the ocean to showcase their talents.

Nineteen-year-old UTRGV student, Fabiola Ramirez, is one of the girls who got the opportunity to go to Paris. She talked about how she began her modeling career earlier this year, and within a short amount of time she considered this to be a hobby she enjoyed.

“It [modeling] has its pros and cons but it helps you become more confident in yourself and have more experience in the community, with yourself and how to talk to others, you know, just be out in the public,” said Ramirez.

She mentioned Alicia Monje, a designer from the Valley whose work was strutted by the RGV models across the runway.

“She wanted for her signature models to attend Paris fashion week, for us to model her designs and her art and creative process of her dresses and the line and everything she created,” said Ramirez.

But Ramirez did not get where she is at in her career without working towards it.

“You get better by practicing, obviously, by putting yourself out there and practicing confidence because as a model you need to have a lot of confidence,” said Ramirez.

Rio Grande Valley model Abbi Castro said that being able to make it to the big stage of modeling was a dream come true.

“It definitely was a big honor, I love fashion already, it constantly inspires me to be part of the artist’s experience and to help bring her work to life. I mean it was just a dream,” said Castro.

She also gave advice for women interested in modeling.

“For other future models or just any artist in any field, don’t give up on your dream and on yourself. You never know where life can take you, just like this opportunity, it presented itself. Life always presents you with opportunities, but you need to be prepared and have the courage to take them,” said Castro.
