The wait is over. The UTRGV Football Team made history after taking the field Saturday in its debut game. The Vaqueros won 66-0 to Sul Ross State University at the UTRGV Vackar Stadium.
Football head coach Travis Bush said the players are excited to execute the hard work they have gone through the past year. Bush’s goal for this season is to focus one day at a time.
He emphasized adjustments will always be involved in every game to help improve all the players’ experiences.
“We’re as curious about our own team,” Bush said. “We got to get out and we see how our guys function in those situations and see how they do on all three phases. So definitely, again, looking to, hopefully, to get a lot of guys in regardless of the score. Up or down, we want to roll a bunch of guys in and get them experienced and see how different guys play in certain situations.”
Quarterback Eddie Marburger said having a football team in the Valley is a dream come true and an exciting time for fans.
He added the most important part of being a new team is creating bonds throughout the year’s preparation.
“I feel like this team has a lot of chemistry in this bond,” Marburger said. “I feel like it’s unbreakable.”
Defensive end DC Thompson said he would like to set the tone for the future teams.
Thompson said the Vaqueros Performance Center made the team’s work become more productive and the environment of the facility is fun to be in.
