The RGV College Democrats gathered students and community members Nov.5 at UTRGV Edinburg campus, to hear from Julio Salinas, a candidate for Texas House District 41.
The conference encouraged dialogue between students and candidates, emphasizing the importance of youth participation and community leadership in local politics.
Salinas, who is running against Democrat Rep. Eric Holguin, spoke about his experience as a young political leader and his commitment to representation within the Texas Democratic Party.
“I’m also the youngest, one of the youngest members of the State Democratic Executive Committee, one of the youngest leaders of the Texas Democratic Party representing the Hispanic caucus, I got elected at the State Convention last year,” Salinas said.
Public Relations Officer for the RGV Democrats, Hoskar Sosa highlighted the group’s recent achievements.
“I’m very proud of what this group has been able to accomplish, especially bringing down statewide candidates as well as working with local candidates,” Sosa said.
Secretary of the Treasury Lilia Ramirez gave insight into the planning process and the effort behind coordinating candidate campaigns on campus.
“There’s a lot of logistics in planning that goes into that, it’s very stressful, we’re all certainly on edge with each other on the day of the event, because there’s a lot of planning that goes into it,” Ramirez said.
