Texas State Representative and U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico is scheduled to appear at UTRGV Wednesday, September 30, as part of “In Dialogue: TEXAS,” a two-part Q&A series presented by the United States Hispanic Business Council.
The event will take place at the PlainsCapital Bank Student Union Theater on the Edinburg campus. Doors will open at 11 a.m., with the program scheduled to begin at noon.
Talarico will participate in a conversation moderated by Javier Palomarez, president and CEO of the United States Hispanic Business Council. The USHBC says Palomarez will ask Talarico the same questions separately to the Republican U.S. Senate candidate Ken Paxton during his September 28 conversation.
The USHBC describes the event as a conversation focused on topics including the cost of living, health care, workforce issues and access to capital for small businesses.
Vice president of the RGV College Democrats, Robbie Juarez, said he is particularly interested in hearing how Talarico would address issues specific in the Rio Grande Valley.
“I’d like to hear his plan specifically for the Valley. You know, we’re a very unique space. We’re like a third space. You know, we’re not North Texas, and we’re not Mexico obviously right?,” Juarez said.
President of the RGV College Democrats Roberto Guerra said the organization also hopes events like this encourage students to participate more actively.
“We want to see everyone at UTRGV more politically active, more mobilized, and just going out there to vote this upcoming election,” Guerra said.
For students, the event offers an opportunity to hear directly from Talarico and learn more about his positions and approachment to Texas
Juarez said the event can also help students better understand the candidate.
“It’s a really important event for students who attend, so they can hear who this candidate is and how he’d represent us,” Juarez said.
The Texas general election is set for Tuesday, November 3. The deadline to register to vote is October 5. Early voting will take place from October 19 through October 30, and on Election Day, polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Students can check their voter registration status and find their polling location through VoteTexas.gov, the official voter information website for Texas.
