The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics recognizes Senior in International Business Carlo Izurieta as UTRGV’s athlete of the Week.
The announcement came after he scored a 2-1in singles and straight set 6-4, 6-3 against Grand Canyon’s Freddie Grant and then finished out the weekend with a three-set victory against Texas A&M.
Izurieta had this to share about the news.
“Feels really nice, I have been putting lots of effort, lots of hours in court listening to my coaches, trying to treat myself well in and outside the court.”
Izurieta told Vaquero Radio the different things he enjoys about tennis.
“I enjoy the crowd, having fun, making some good points, finish the points fast, when the point is long, and you make it cause when you lose a point is not fun but when talent is involved, and points are difficult to make they just happened.”
The Assistant Athletic Director for Communications Daniel Elizondo explained that the decision to make him athlete of the week is based on highlighting the standing performances.
“The win against Texas A&M really put him over the top.”
The tennis team will have their last game on Saturday at 10 a.m. when they close out the regular season at Prairie View A&M.
