With the UTRGV men’s soccer team’s 2022-2023 season well on its way, Vaquero Radio caught up with coach Bryheem Hancock to talk about his outlook for the new season.
This year, the team is composed of 18 new players and only nine returning, which include junior forward Juan Rivera and senior defender Jan Engels.
With all this new talent on the team, Hancock shared his goal for this year.
The Vaqueros started strong with a 3-1 season opener win over Bryant University Bulldogs this past Thursday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
Rivera, Freshman Defender Rasmus Steuch , and senior defender Jan Engels each scored goals for the Vaqueros.
The Vaqueros controlled the game from start to finish, absolutely dominating possessions and outshooting Bryant 8-1 in the first half and 8-2 in the second half.
The Vaqueros also led shots on goal with a total of 10 attempts to two for Bryant.
Junior defender Isaac Ochoa and Junior defender Tristan Singh were a big part of Vaqueros defense by allowing minimal penetration to the backfield. Bryant’s one goal came from Bryant Kozubal in the 86th minute.
The Vaqueros’ next match will be against Texas A&M International at 4 p.m. Sept. 1 at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex , this will be their 3rd regular season game.
This is Edward Ochoa for Vaquero Radio.
