New safety concerns rise across the UTRGV campuses after recent reports of suspected followings. The UTRGV Police Department is aware of these issues and is recommending students to be proactive. Chief of Police, Raul Munguia has this advice to students.
[su_quote]”As far as these types of situations, the first thing that they should be doing is calling our dispatchers to get our officers out there. Basically, we really don’t want our students to feel unsafe or anything on campus, especially in the evening hours.”

Students that have experienced some situations like these are using smartphone applications for security. Mass Communications junior, Abigail Ortiz-Dominguez tells us what she uses when she’s walking to her vehicle after sundown.
[su_quote]”I have Campus Shield on my phone. I always–whenever I get out–I always call either a friend or my mom just to, like, talk me through while I get to where I’m going next.”

Chief Munguia tells UTRGV Radio that an open line of communication between the UTRGV Police Department and students and staff is vital for the safety of anyone on campus.
[su_quote]”Lots of people say that they are bothering us, but that’s why we are here. This is their campus. Who else besides the police, faculty, and staff better knows the campus and looks out for the place? That would be our students. They know what their campus looks like, they know the feel of the campus, and if something doesn’t feel right, call us.”
