Yesterday, the UTRGV Vaqueros Men’s Basketball team faced the Texas Southern University Tigers for their second and last game in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. UTRGV lead for the first half of the game with a score of 41 to 36. Ultimately, the Tigers took the win with a close score of 94 to 85. Head Coach Lew Hill tells us about his team’s performance.

[su_quote]“We started way in the summer, and I think you could start seeing us fatigue a little bit. I’ve seen and I’ve been trying to hide it, but you can see it. We’ve started practice way in June I think, either June or August. You know, we went over the play and fatigue hits you and mentally, it hit us. We didn’t defend and that was the game.”

UTRGV’s starting five put up 68 points with guard Tyson Smith scoring 18 points. Forward Jeremy Combs lead the tigers by adding an impressive 27 points. Guard Javon Levi scored the Vaqueros 13 assists and four takeovers. UTRGV shot 3-13, 23.1 percent from the 3-point line, and 29.2 percent overall. While the Tigers shot 5-7, 71.4 percent from the 3-point line, and 46.7 percent overall. Guard Tyson Smith tells us what the team has done for the community surrounding UTRGV.

[su_quote]“People believe now. People come to games now. I remember when people wouldn’t come to our games, I remember when people wouldn’t even talk about our games. You see two games in a row almost sold out, the music jumping, everybody’s involved in the game. I mean, people are going to remember this.”

The Vaqueros led the game for 27 minutes, while the Tigers led for only eight and a half minutes. Coach Hill thanks the community and all of UTRGV for supporting the team.

[su_quote]“I would like to thank the crowd. The crowd was tremendous, and we appreciate all of them coming out. All over the Valley, the students, the faculty, and the whole valley for supporting this team.”
