Last thursday the UTRGV Baseball team went up against the California Baptist University Lancers. UTRGV took the loss with a final score 3 to 6. The Vaqueros got off to weak start, scoring only 2 unanswered runs by the bottom of the 3rd. The game went scoreless until the 6th inning when the Lancers added 4 runs. Head coach Derek Matlock tells UTRGV Radio what the challenge was like for the team.
[su_quote] “It’s not good. Not good. It’s frustrating when you play defense on the mound you know he threw the ball fine. There were two errors he made on the bunt, the two bunts. The bunt they screwed up a safety and bunted it back as an easy out. That runner wouldn’t even have been there if we filled the bunt away. So, our defense had played great defense for the last three or four games and we’ve played good defense and the night just didn’t make a difference on the mound.”

The Lancers 2nd basemen Luke Navigato led both teams with a batting average of .348. The Lancers pitcher Logan Rinhart logged the win and UTRGV’s pitcher Trevelle Hill took the loss. UTRGV’s center fielder Coleman Grubbs explains how the loss felt.
[su_quote] “It was tough, obviously we should feel like we are better than them, I mean we just made a couple mistakes on defense, and thought we had some good at bats but also some poor at bats but we just didn’t execute, and they executed.”
