The UTRGV Military and Veteran Success Center helps Veterans have an easy transition when returning to school.

Political Science Senior Frank Noels tells UTRGV Radio the difficulties he experienced when returning to school after serving eight years in the US Navy and two years in the US Air Force Security Services.

“I was completely lost. I didn’t know anything. Actually, the first time I got here I was walking around the entire campus so I could figure things out.”

Within his experience, Noels explains how he “stays away” from the library because of how crowded it can be.

The center has a veterans lounge that has computers exclusive to Veterans or military family.

Math Senior Alyssa Gillen, who served for the US Air Force Security Services explains how the lounge has created a safe and quiet environment.

“Having our own space up here, and our lounge, just made the transition a lot easier because when you get out, you are just kind of at a loss. Because you lost a whole part of you in getting into the military and the coming here and finding more student veterans has made it another family that I probably would be lost without.”

Gillen and Noels say that the center has become a safe place where everybody is welcomed and treated like family.

The lounge is located at the University Center building in Edinburg and at Cavalry Hall in Brownsville.
