UTRGV Athletics announced new changes to its official app last Tuesday but users such as The Herd president and UTRGV graduate student Rodrigo Barrera III feels that more improvements could be made.

The new updates to the GoUTRGV app include Orange Hours where users can visit select dining and car wash locations from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and receive points with the purchase of an item valued at $5 or more, then sending a valid receipt photo via email to goutrgv@utrgv.edu.

Six locations in total are offered, with five in Edinburg and one in Brownsville.

Partners for Orange Hours according to UTRGV Athletics will include:

— Chick-fil-A on 3385 Boca Chica Blvd. in Brownsville,

–BlueWave Express Car Wash on 382 W. University Dr. in Edinburg,

— Golden Chick on 401 S. Sugar Rd. in Edinburg,

–IHOP on 2716 W. University Dr. in Edinburg,

–Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers on 718 W. University Dr. in Edinburg and

–Taco Palenque on 1414 W. University Dr. in Edinburg

Barrera said he would like to see the new feature of Orange Hours to be available at more locations for the convenience of users that are across the Rio Grande Valley.

“Honestly, I don’t think it’s effective ‘cause if they are going to do it they need to have it more than certain locations,” he said. “Because me, personally, I live in La Joya so if you think I’m going to go check-in and drive all the way to University Dr. to the Cane’s to buy something, to login in, to take the picture of my receipt the chances of that happening is 0.01”

Barrera suggests adding locations every 10 to 20 miles for users to have more access to corporate partners across the Valley.

Although limited locations are a concern, UTRGV Athletics Director of Marketing and Digital Media Kara Lara said that the department is looking to add more locations in the following months.

“It’s something that our sponsorship team is definitely looking to explore and expand,” Lara said. “And I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a lot more restaurants and businesses added to the app in the next coming weeks and throughout the semester.”

Additional updates include Trivia Tuesday where users can put their knowledge of UTRGV Athletics to the test to earn points and prizes. Questions will be related to UTRGV Athletics history and current events.

Lara said the new changes to the app were made to make it more interactive during COVID-19, providing fans different ways to earn points and redeem prizes such as official UTRGV Under Armour apparel and swag.

“Right now, we don’t have any games going on we’ve created a few different ways for people to earn points that way their still able to earn those rewards and redeem those prizes,” she said.

To download the app and start earning points, visit the App Store or Google Play Store and search UTRGV Athletics.
