Matchup versus GCU canceled after positive COVID-19 test
In a news release Friday afternoon, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced Saturday night’s matchup at Bert Ogden Arena between UTRGV men’s basketball and Grand Canyon University has been canceled.
According to the news release, the cancelation was prompted after a Tier I member of the Grand Canyon men’s basketball program tested positive for COVID-19.
A Tier I member, according to the NCAA, consists of student-athletes, coaches, athletic trainers and physical therapists, medical staff, equipment staff and officials.
According to the news release, games against Grand Canyon are not set to be made up but could be if the teams find a common week off in the future.
UTRGV will now be shifting gears and replacing the Grand Canyon matchup by traveling to Houston to face Texas Southern 7 p.m. Saturday at Health & Performance Education Arena.
The Tigers currently sit in fifth place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and have the league’s best offense, averaging 70 points per game led by senior guard Michael Weathers averaging 14 points and two steals per contest.
Texas Southern had an open spot in their schedule to host UTRGV after they announced Thursday night that their Saturday SWAC matchup was postponed due to COVID-19 related issues within the Prairie View A&M basketball program.
Both teams last faced each other in the second round of the 2019 CollegeInsider.com Tournament where the Vaqueros fell at home 94-85 to end the 2018-19 season.
You can watch the game live on Texas Southern’s Youtube page at Texas Southern Athletics.
