The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced that the men’s soccer season home opener against Grand Canyon University has been canceled in a news release Wednesday afternoon.
According to the news release, the cancelation was promoted after a Tier I member of the Grand Canyon University men’s soccer program tested positive for COVID-19.
A Tier I member, according to the NCAA, consists of student-athletes, coaches, athletic trainers and physical therapists, medical staff, equipment staff and officials.
According to the news release, UTRGV is exploring opportunities to schedule a match this weekend.
The last home match for the Vaqueros at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex was on Nov. 3, 2019 in a 0-1 loss to eventual 2019 WAC Champions Seattle U.
The next scheduled match for the Vaqueros is scheduled for 2 p.m. Feb. 20 on the road against California Baptist University.
At the moment, UTRGV will have a month-long wait for their season home opener when they host the University of Nevada, Las Vegas at noon on March 13.
Games against California Baptist University are not scheduled to be made up unless both programs have a common week off in the future.
