In a news release Wednesday morning, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced its men’s March basketball program will not play this weekend as they mourn the loss of Head Coach Lew Hill.

Coach Hill died Sunday at the age of 55.

The team was slated to play Feb. 12 and 13 versus California Baptist University in Riverside, California. The Lancers are currently the fourth seed in the Western Athletic Conference.

In a pre-recorded interview from Senior Associate Athletic Director of Communication Jonah Goldberg, UTRGV Vice President and Director of Athletics Chasse Conque explained how the department arrived at the decision.

“As you can imagine it’s been a very emotional last few days for our student-athletes, coaches within the men’s program [and] obviously our entire department,” Conque says. “After several conversations we came to the conclusion that its best to not put our team on the road this weekend.”

The status of the Vaqueros’ future games is still to be determined but Conque says the priority of the department is the program’s well-being.

“Obviously support our young people and coaches 100% and take more time as we need that time to continue the healing process,” Conque says.

Vaquero Radio has not contacted any men’s basketball players or coaches out of respect and privacy during this time.

An acting head coach will be determined at a future date.

Games against California Baptist are not scheduled to be made up unless both programs have a common week off in the future.
