UTRGV Athletics Week in Review: Feb. 15-21

Baseball

  • Three-game weekend series Feb. 19-21 vs. Lamar University

The 2021 season-opening series for the Vaqueros was canceled due to a positive test of COVID-19 of a Tier I member within the Lamar baseball program. 

Men’s Basketball

  • Friday and Saturday night games vs. Seattle U

The Vaqueros’ Western Athletic Conference (WAC) matchup was canceled as the Redhawk had travel issues coming to Edinburg due to Winter Storm Uri. 

Both games are not set to be made up unless both squads have a common weekend off before March 6. 

  • Sunday night 116–51 victory vs. Dallas Christian

In the first game since the passing of UTRGV Head Coach Lew Hill, the Vaqueros broke triple digits in an emotional night for all in attendance. 

Multiple Vaqueros had career nights highlighted by junior guard LeQuan Butler who finished with a career-high 22 points and junior forward Marek Nelson with 18 points.

Women’s Basketball (5-10, 1-5)

  • Friday night 84-74 victory vs. Seattle U in Washington

The Vaqueros snapped their 7-game losing streak on the road as junior guard Jordan Lewis had a career night with 31 points and going a perfect 7-7 from deep. 

Graduate guard Amara Graham stuffed the stat sheet as she finished with 12 points, six rebounds and nine assists. 

  • Saturday night overtime 64-71 defeat vs. Seattle U in Washington

After the Vaqueros were down at the half, 14-37, they roared back into the game and went on a 20-8 fourth-quarter run to even the score at 61 and force overtime. Once in the extra frame, the Vaqueros fell short and split the season series against the Redhawks.

Vaquero sophomore guard Sara Bershers led all scorers with a 24-point performance to go along with 13 rebounds. Junior center Burcu Soysal ended with a game-high 14 rebounds, eight of them offensive, to go along with nine points. 

Men’s Soccer (1-0, 1-0)

  • Saturday matchup vs. California Baptist University in Riverside, California

The Vaqueros road match was rescheduled for 8 p.m. Wednesday as the team faced travel issues due to Winter Storm Uri. 

Women’s Soccer (3-0-2, 0-0-1)

  • Thursday night match vs. Seattle U 

The Vaqueros opening conference game of the 2021 season was rescheduled for 11 a.m. Monday due to travel issues the Redhawks faced coming into South Texas due to Winter Storm Uri.

  • Saturday afternoon double-overtime 1-1 draw vs. Seattle U

The Vaqueros were able to secure one point against the defending WAC Champion Redhawks as junior forward Emily Zapata found the back of the net in the 69th minute in what UTRGV Head Coach Glad Bugariu would describe  the goal as the “spectacular kind.” 

Although the Vaqueros’ 345-minute shutout streak came to an end, UTRGV sophomore goalkeeper Maile Lunardi recorded a career-high nine saves. 

Men’s Tennis (3-6)

  • Friday afternoon 1-6 defeat vs. Troy at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions in Corpus Christi

The lone point of the day for the Vaqueros came in singles on court No. 1 as junior Carlo Izurieta beat junior Pelayo Antuna in a walkover after he retired in the second set. 

The Vaqueros were also able to win on court No. 3 in doubles as sophomore Te Kani Williams and senior Mateo Schmit defeated freshman Vito Llinares and Amer Bedwan 7-6. Troy ultimately won the doubles point as the recorded victories on the other two courts.

  • Saturday afternoon 0-7 defeat vs. UTSA at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions in Corpus Christi

The lone bright spot of the day for the Vaqueros was on court No. 2 in doubles as sophomore Samuel de Felipe Garza and junior Carlo Izurieta defeated freshman Slava Gulin and senior Juri Reckow 6-3. 

The Roadrunners would take the other two doubles matches and swept the Vaqueros in singles.

  • Sunday afternoon 1–4 defeat vs. Texas A&M Corpus Christi at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions in Corpus Christi

Vaqueros junior Carlo Izurieta obtained the only victory of the day for UTRGV going the distance (3-6, 6-2, 6-2) against Islander Ryuya Ata. 

The Vaqueros were swept in their remaining singles matches once the match was clinched and sophomore Samuel de Felipe Garcia and senior Mateo Schmit matches went unfinished. 

The Vaqueros were also swept in their doubles matches.

Women’s Tennis (0-5)

  • Friday match vs. Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas 

The Vaqueros matchday against the Bearkats was canceled early in the week due to weather conditions of Winter Storm Uri. 

  • Saturday morning matchup vs. the University of Houston in Houston

The matchday was canceled due to Winter Storm Uri. This was the third match that has been canceled due to weather-related conditions.

The next game day for the Vaqueros is at 1 p.m. Tuesday on the road against Texas A&M Corpus-Christi. 

Volleyball (0-6, 0-4)

  • Tuesday night match vs. Texas A&M Corpus Christi 

The lone game of the week for the Vaqueros was canceled due to Winter Storm Uri. 

This was set to be the rematch in the South Texas Showdown after the Islanders swept the Vaqueros 3-0 in their previous matchup. The game is not scheduled to be made up but could be rescheduled for a later date.
