Baseball (11-9, 4-4) 

  • Tuesday night seven inning 2-15 defeat vs. No. 7 Texas in Austin

The Vaqueros only two runs came in the top of the fourth as graduate first baseman Andy Atwood drove in a run on a double to left center followed by a junior right fielder Freddy Rojas Jr. RBI single. 

UTRGV used eight different pitchers on the day with right-hander junior Zach De Leon having the longest outing throwing 1.2 allowing one hit and striking out two of the five batters he faced. 

  • Friday night 6-7 defeat vs. Dixie State in St. George, Utah

In the first ever game between both programs, the Trailblazers down 2-5 put up five late inning runs to snatch a victory from the jaws of defeat with a PH Tyson Fisher walkoff RBI-single. 

Graduate center fielder Coleman Grubbs put the Vaqueros on the board, in the second, with a single to left center that drove in graduate shortstop Christian Sepulveda and junior first baseman Angel De La Cruz on a fielding error by junior center fielder Jagun Leavitt. 

Junior right fielder Freddy Rojas Jr. hit a two-run moonshot in the third to put the Vaqueros ahead 4-0. 

In the fourth, graduate left fielder Elijah Alexander added another run with an RBI-sac fly to center that brought Grubbs home.

Grubbs would continue to put on an offensive showcase with a solo-shot, finishing the day with three hits and two RBIs in five plate appearances, to put the Vaqueros ahead 6-2. 

  • Saturday afternoon six inning 13-3 victory vs. Dixie State in St. George, Utah

The Vaqueros bats came alive late, in the fifth and sixth inning, to take the first game of the doubleheader as graduate starting pitcher Max Balderrama Jr. would throw a complete game only allowing five hits, three runs, all earned and striking out six. 

With a 3-2 lead, graduate second baseman Andy Atwood would get the scoring flurry underway in the fifth with an RBI-single. Junior first baseman Angel De La Cruz would follow with an RBI-sac fly. Graduate shortstop Christian Sepulveda would triple to center field driving in two. Graduate left fielder Elijah Alexander would execute a perfect bunt down the third base line to score Atwood to lead 8-2. 

In the sixth, De La Cruz would belt a two-run home run to left center giving the Vaqueros a 10-2 advantage. Sepulveda and Alexander would both hit RBI-singles and junior third baseman Darian Luper would cap off the game with a RBI-double. 

Junior right fielder Freddy Rojas Jr., hitting in the cleanup spot, doubled in the first to drive in a run and in the third took the Trailblazers starting freshman pitcher Ryan Hardman to deep left center for his second home run of the series, bringing in graduate catcher Conrado Diaz.

The 10-run rule was enacted at the end of the sixth.

  • Saturday night seven inning 18-1 victory vs. Dixie State in St. George, Utah

The Vaqueros trailed 0-1 at the start of the third but junior catcher RJ Ochoa took Trailblazers’ starting freshman pitcher Ben Hart deep to center to even the game at one. 

A few batters later, junior right fielder Freddy Rojas Jr. belted a grand slam to crack the game wide open with a 5-1 lead. Graduate left fielder Elijah Alexander and Ochoa would hit RBI-singles to close the third inning scoring explosion. 

In the fourth inning, junior DH Angel De La Cruz would drive in a run by slicing a ball through the top of the diamond. Graduate second baseman Andy Atwood would also hit an RBI-single in the top of the fifth to give the Vaqueros a 9-1 lead. 

The Vaqueros extended their lead to unimaginable heights scoring nine runs on nine hits in the seventh. Graduate first baseman Conrado Diaz and De La Cruz knocked in four runs on a two-RBI double and single, respectively. Senior left fielder Jacob Hirsh added another run with a double to right center; junior third baseman Darian Luper drove in two with a single to left and freshman center fielder Spencer Serven closed out the inning with a two-run home run to left. 

Sophomore starting pitcher Colten Davis earned his fourth win of the season throwing six innings giving up five hits, allowing one run and striking out five on 87 pitches.  

  • Sunday afternoon 2-3 defeat vs. Dixie State in St. George, Utah

Despite a fourth-straight game with a homerun for junior right fielder Freddy Rojas Jr., in the top of the fourth, the Vaqueros split their season series against the Trailblazers. 

Graduate second baseman Andy Atwood brought the Vaqueros within one in the top of the eight with a sacrifice fly that scored graduate center fielder Coleman Grubbs. 

Trailblazer starting senior pitcher Tevita Gerber earned the win throwing seven innings allowing seven hits, two runs, one earned, walking two and striking out four. 

Men’s Golf

  • 11th place finish out of 16 at the GCU Invitational in Phoenix

The Vaqueros finished the three-round tournament tied for 11th alongside California Baptist University with a score of 881; one stroke ahead of 13th place Omaha and South Dakota and one stroke behind 9th place North Dakota State and Creighton. 

Freshman Rhaasrikanesh Kanavathi was the highest placing Vaquero with a score of 217 through three rounds.

Women’s Golf

  • 10th place finish out of 11 at the HBU Husky Invitational in Sugar Land, Texas

The Vaqueros ended their tournament with a 943-team score, seven strokes behind UT Arlington and 66 strokes ahead of McLennan CC. 

Freshman Samantha Garza placed 25th with a score of 228, shooting a 77, 74 and 77. 

Men’s Soccer (3-0-2, 3-0-2)

  • Saturday night double overtime 1-1 draw vs. San Jose State in San Jose, California

The Vaqueros scored the opening goal of the match off the right foot junior forward Reshaun Walkes in the 18th minute with the assist being credited to junior forward Alex Frank. 

The Spartans were able to even up the score in the 56th minute when junior defender Kameron Bolden found the back of the net. 

Vaquero junior goalkeeper Trevor Schneider would finish the day with six saves.  

Women’s Soccer (7-4-2, 4-4-1)

  • Thursday night 2-1 victory vs. Grand Canyon University in Phoenix

Junior midfielder Anna Barkey notched her first goal of the season in the 10th minute to put the Vaquero ahead 1-0. 

In the 71st minute, the Antelopes would convert a PK to even the match at one but the Vaqueros would respond in the 78th minute by converting a PK of their own as junior forward Emily Zapata scored her third goal of the season.

The Vaqueros were outshot 26-10 and 10-4 on goal but UTRGV junior goalkeeper Maile Lunardi recorded nine saves preserving the 2-1 victory.

  • Saturday afternoon 0-3 defeat vs. Grand Canyon University in Phoenix

The Vaqueros suffered their first road loss of the season, now 5-1-0, as the Antelopes found the back of the net in the 14th, 42nd and 64th minute outshooting UTRGV 21-11 and 12-4 on goal. 

Junior goalkeeper Maile Lunardi through 78 minutes made six saves until being booked on a red card, her first of the season, and freshman Macie Blohowiak recorded three saves to close out of the game. 

Men’s Tennis (3-12)

  • Saturday afternoon 0-4 defeat vs. UTSA in San Antonio

In the first action since March 10, the Vaqueros were swept as the Roadrunners earned the first point of the day with victories on court No. 2 and 3 in doubles.

In singles, the Roadrunners swept the Vaqueros by taking victories on court No. 1, 5 and 6 to clinch the victory, as the remaining matches went unfinished.

  • Sunday afternoon 3-4 defeat vs. Incarnate Word in San Antonio

The Vaqueros took the opening point of the day with two out of three wins in doubles with freshman Luka Jankovic and junior Zane Kohrs, junior Carlo Izurieta and sophomore Samuel De Felipe Garcia.

In singles, the Vaqueros quickly extended their lead with an Izurieta win on court one, 6-1, 6-1. 

The Cardinals responded by taking points on court No. 2, 5 and 6 to lead 3-2. 

Garcia evened up the match at three on court No. 3 with a hard fought, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory.

Ultimately, the Vaqueros fell as Cardinal senior Warren Fulgenzi Jr. defeated Kohrs in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, earning the matchday victory. 

Women’s Tennis (3-10, 1-1)

  • Monday morning 1-6 defeat vs. Sam Houston State in Corpus Christi

In the neutral site matchday, the Vaqueros lone win came in singles as freshman Lea Karren defeated sophomore Petra Kaszas after dropping the first set 4-6 and coming back 6-4 and 10-5 to take the match. 

The Vaqueros fell in their five remaining singles matches. 

Freshman Isabelle Bahr and sophomore Katarina Sasaroga won their doubles match but the Vaqueros fell on court No. 1 and 3, ultimately surrendering the opening point of the day. 

  • Friday afternoon WAC Cluster 2-5 defeat vs. New Mexico State in St. George, Utah

In the first conference action of the season, the Vaqueros fell in doubles, dropping the opening point, despite freshman Isabelle Bahr and Katarina Sasaroga winning on court two. 

In singles, freshman Lea Karren and sophomore Sandra Putz defeated freshman Bella Nguyen and Lucija Josipovic, respectively, for the only two points of the day for the Vaqueros.

  • Saturday evening WAC Cluster 6-1 victory vs. Chicago State in St. George, Utah

The Vaqueros would take the opening point of the day by winning on court No. 1 and 2 with doubles partners freshman Lea Karren and Valeria Montero and sophomore Katarina Sasaroga and freshman Isabelle Bahr, respectively. 

In singles, Bahr, Sasaroga, Karren, sophomore Sandra Putz and junior Alicia Thal won to clinch the first conference win of the season.

Men’s Track and Field 

  • One first, three second and three third place finishes at the UTSA Invitational in San Antonio

Graduate Anthony Magallon set the program record in the decathlon finishing third with 6,402 points by placing first in the 100m dash and the 400m dash, second in the pole vault and 1,500m run and third in the long jump. 

Freshman Alex Galvan finished eighth in the decathlon with 5,660 points, second best in program history, placing third in the shot put. Junior Roel Renteria set the third best mark in program history with 5,629 points, placing ninth and winning the 110m hurdles. 

Sophomore Julian Trevino in 11th place and freshman Marco Guajardo in 12th place, finished with 5,341 and 4,887 points to set the fourth and fifth best marks in program history, respectively.   

In the field events, junior Harry Barthelemy placed first in the triple jump with a leap of 15.08m, second-best in program history and third in the long jump with a distance of 7.05m. 

Graduate Paul May and freshman Michael Campbell placed second and third in the shotput with throws of 16.71m, third best in program history and 16.18m, respectively. 

On the track, the team of sophomore Yashawn Hamilton, graduate Yariel Matute, junior Mario Hernandez and freshman Jermarrion Stewart placed second in the 4×400-meter relay with a time of 40.62, a program record. 

Graduate Ricardo Mendoza would place second with a time of 1:54.19 in the 800-meter run.

Women’s Track and Field 

  • One first place and three second place finishes at the UTSA Invitational in San Antonio

Graduate Aviana Goode placed fifth in the heptathlon with 4,605 points, a program record, with second place finishes in the long jump and high jump, placing third in the 100-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash. 

Sophomore Uxia Pereira finished sixth in the heptathlon with 4,118 points, the fifth best mark in program history. 

On the field, graduate Desirea Buerge placed second in the discus with a mark of 53.57m, a program record and set the fifth best mark in program history with a second place 15.36m throw in the shot put. 

Sophomore Tamara Woodley finished atop the podium with a time of 55.30 in the 400-meter dash, the ninth best mark in program history. 

Lastly, the 4×400-meter relay, the team of fifth year Idatonye Cheetman-West, junior Zarrey Sams, sophomore Mystique Brown and freshman Daniella Muniz placed second with a time of 47.09, second best time in program history. 

Volleyball (2-12, 2-10)

  • Monday night 1-3 defeat vs. Utah Valley University 

Midway through the opening set, the Vaqueros led 14-12 and after a senior middle blocker Veronika Jandova kill, the team rattled off an 11-4 run to close out the first set. 

The Wolverines would respond by taking the next three sets and winning the opening match of the series (15-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-21).

Despite falling, the Vaqueros played strong defense by recording a season-high 13 blocks to go along with 22 block assists. 

Three different Vaqueros recorded 11 kills which included Jandova and outside hitters junior Yasmim Da Silva and sophomore Victoire Nama.

  • Tuesday afternoon 0-3 defeat vs. Utah Valley University 

The Vaqueros fell in straight sets (15-25, 26-28, 19-25) to the Wolverines in their final home match of the season. 

Sophomore outside hitter Victoire Nama recorded a double-double with a game-high 15 kills and 10 digs.
