Members of KVAQ-TV, Vaquero Radio, The Rider newspaper, Gallery and Pulse magazines won 35 previously published and broadcast awards from the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) on March 26.
The annual TIPA Convention and on-site competitions were canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
TIPA, which was established in 1909, is the oldest state collegiate press association in the nation.
UTRGV competes in Division 1, which includes schools such as the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Texas at Arlington, the University of North Texas, Texas A&M University, Texas Tech and Texas State University.
Vaquero Radio received 13 awards; KVAQ-TV, seven; The Rider, six; Pulse magazine, five; and Gallery magazine, three; and Student Media, one, for work published and broadcast during 2020.
In the Open Division contest, Pulse placed first in the Overall Excellence-General Magazine contest for its fifth issue and Gallery placed first in Overall Excellence-Literary Magazine for its 2020 issue.
Pulse placed second in Story Package Design-Magazine; third in the Overall Design-Magazine competition for the same issue; and Yazmin Sanchez Cortez and Sydney Ribera from Gallery placed second in Cover Design-Literary Magazine.
In the Spanish Division, The Rider Spanish Reporter Paulina Longoria earned first place in Spanish News Story for her article, “¿Qué eres?” and an honorable mention in Spanish Feature Story.
KVAQ-TV Reporter Alan Martinez garnered third place in Spanish Multimedia News Reporting for his story, “La Real Academia Española Retira la Palabra ‘Elle” and former contributor Kenya Correa received an honorable mention.
In the Electronic Reporting category, former Vaquero Radio News Director Justin Elizalde earned first place in Feature Reporting-Audio, second place in In-Depth News Reporting-Audio and Station Manager Victor G. Ramirez received an honorable mention in In-Depth News Reporting-Audio.
The Rider Photographer Roxanna Miranda won first place in Multimedia Slideshow and third in a collaborative piece with former Reporter Maleny Ortega in Feature Reporting-Video.
Vaquero Radio earned first place in Newscast-Audio for its March 23 newscast.
In a collaborative effort, Student Media staff earned an honorable mention for the article, “UTRGV investigates lecturer’s alleged comments.”

–KVAQ-TV Reporter and former radio Reporter Hector Tamez garnered two honorable mentions for Feature Reporting-Audio and Video
In the Production contest, former radio Assistant Station Manager Jerry Galindo placed first in Advertising/PSA/Promo-Video; Pulse Graphics Editor Michel Flores Tavizón, first and third, Static Ad Design; Vaquero Radio staff received second and third in Advertising Campaign; Maritzabel Salinas from Gallery, third, Illustration; Ramirez earned an honorable mention in Advertising/PSA/Promo-Audio; and KVAQ-TV received an honorable mention in Advertising/PSA/Promo-Video.
