RGV Paranormal Investigations will be conducting their annual ghost hunt at Texas Southmost College on Oct. 30 at 8 p.m.
The group was started by founder Thomas Hotcaveg, his daughter Janie Hotcaveg and his sister Bonnie Hotcaveg Salazar.
Thomas was once a skeptic until his friend invited him to ghost hunts. He then started conducting paranormal investigations back in 2012 with his daughter Janie who was seven years old at the time.
Janie says she is able to sense spirits and their emotions due to her exposure to the paranormal at a young age.
“As a kid, we’re told ‘there’s no such thing as ghosts, there’s no such thing as ghosts’ so that we shut that off, well since I started ghost hunting at an early age my sixth sense is a lot higher than normal people’s.”
The father and daughter explained that their group’s goal is to educate the people of the Rio Grande Valley on the paranormal and help them understand what they may be experiencing.
The Ghost Hunts have ranged from 20-75 people, with all participants being briefed on what equipment is being used and how to use it.
The following video is from a past investigation of Fort Brown where the Hotcavegs are communicating with what is believed to be a ghost.
TSC is located where Fort Brown once stood, and retains some of the fort’s original buildings.
The fort was established in 1846 and has seen its fair share of history and death. Gorgas Hall was once the post-hospital of the fort and may be the most haunted area of the school according to Thomas Hotcaveg.
“We’ve had a lot of experiences around Gorgas Hall… and a lot of the participants, they get touched and pushed.”
Junior mechanical engineering major David Garcia is a transfer student from TSC and while he claims he has not seen anything paranormal on campus he does believe in ghosts.
“My cousin told me there was a tree where they hung people in the 1800’s. I don’t know, it was on this campus. also many of the soldiers that died [in] the Mexican American War” Garcia said.
