The UTRGV Women’s Volleyball team traveled to Huntsville, TX for a conference matchup against Sam Houston State last Thursday, falling to the Bearkats by a score of three sets to one.
The Vaquero’s lone set win came in the second set of the match, with the Vaquero’s squeaking by 26-24. Once trailing 11-14, UTRGV rallied for a seven point run against Sam Houston’s two points scored. With three lead changes late in the set, kills by freshman Ingridy Foltran and senior Veronika Jandova, and a final set point by junior Sarah Cruz, allowed the Vaqueros to close out the set.
In the last set of the match, the Vaquero’s kept pace with the Bearkats through the majority of it. UTRGV was able to tie the game three separate times, and at one point were within two points of the Bearkats. However, Sam Houston went on a five point run at the end of the game to seal the victory.
Standout players for UTRGV included sophomore Luisa Silva Dos who tallied nine kills and three blocks during the match, as well as rising freshman Luanna Emilliano who posted her 17th double-double of her career which include her 39 assists and 14 digs.
Jandova recorded eight kills and four blocks, and was a crucial player in the Vaqueros second set comeback and competitive fourth set. Cruz led the team statistically in kills with 23 and also had 15 digs, as well as also being vital in the Vaqueros second set rally and 4th set finish.
The Vaqueros hit the court again at 7 p.m. this Wednesday November 3 against the University of Texas at El Paso in their Memorial Gym. Students and fans may attend the game in person or stream the game through ESPN+ or the WAC Digital Network.
