On Wednesday Nov. 3, the Student Union hosted Tailgate on the Lawn behind the chapel on the Edinburg campus and the Student Union on the Brownsville campus.
This event was organized to celebrate the beginning of the basketball season, with the men’s team having an exhibition game against UT Tyler that same day.
Music played over speakers as attendees could play outdoor games or take a seat and eat the free food. Different organizations also attended with their own respective tables to interact with students.
Biology Freshman Alondra Ramos feels that events like Tailgate on the Lawn are a big part of university life.
“Things like this make me realize I’m getting the college experience, because usually a lot of people would not pay attention to UTRGV and now that I’m here I’m like oh my gosh I love it, there’s a lot more school spirit than I thought there was gonna be.”
Head women’s golf coach Bryan Novoa describes the unity that athletics creates for UTRGV as a whole.
“ We are trying to create experiences for students that are memorable and anytime you have a large group of people together and you’re building community, it helps with the overall experience in general.”
Brownsville early college highschool student Reynaldo Ruiz says events like these help raise better awareness of when there are sporting events, making him more likely to attend.
“Before I didn’t really know that they were happening but now I know that there’s basketball games that are gonna start going on, so I’ll probably look into it, [and] go if I get a chance.”
The UTRGV men’s basketball team will be facing off against Texas A&M international at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the UTRGV fieldhouse on the Edinburg campus.
