The UTRGV Facilities Planning and Operations have begun preparations for construction of a new drainage system in the area north of the Interdisciplinary Engineering and Academic Building on the Edinburg campus.
According to the email sent by the department last week, the project, titled EIEAB Drainage Project, will include the installation of an underground drainage system, new sidewalks, irrigation, and landscaping.
UTRGV Architect and drainage project Manager Juan Ortiz explains the need for a new drainage system near these areas.
“When we had Hurricane Hanna, we had a little bit of flooding in that area. In that the north end of the quad, so we wanted to address that.”
Ortiz said that the fences were set up along the Bronc Trail in order to keep students and staff safe from the construction area.
UTRGV Director of Facilities, Planning and Construction Gerardo Rodriguez says the project will also include a lot of cosmetic changes to the area.
“Since we are going to be digging up the area to improve the drainage, we are taking advantage of when we put everything back that we can put it in with some new sidewalks, new landscaping, some outdoor benches and general improvements.”
Rodriguez explained that about 80% drainage projects and 20% cosmetic.
The email sent to UTRGV students says that the project is projected to be finished in Nov. of 2022.
