UTRGV campus community members and veterans can walk together to honor the lives lost and the heroes who responded to the 9/11 attacks Thursday on the Brownsville or Edinburg campus
The first 50 finishers of the 9/11 Commemorative Walk will receive a towel. University Recreation, ROTC and the UTRGV Military and Veterans Success Center will host the event.
Check-in will begin at 6:30 a.m. and the walk will start at 7 a.m. outside the Student Union in Brownsville and the flagpole in Edinburg.
Military and Veterans Success Center Program Coordinator Ernest Silva said this year’s event is different from others as it will be a walk rather than a run, which was preferred to be more inclusive.
“We’re trying to open it up and have more inclusion for people who may not be able to run,” he said. “People who may have disabilities or you know something that might prevent them from running. We would still like for them to participate one way or another.”
Silva said the organizers do not expect any survivors or family members from the 9/11 attacks to participate. However, veterans from campus and the community will attend the event. From the Military and Veterans Success Center, Silva said three veterans will participate.
