Facing the demands of a young Division I program, UTRGV’s swimmers and divers continue to push forward with focus and resilience.
Freshman swimmer Dia Henderson said the program’s young age has not slowed them down, describing a supportive environment that motivates them to improve.
“I really enjoyed myself. I’ve never had this much fun swimming. So, I think it’s just good starting out a new program and it being all girls. It’s just really positive environment,” Henderson said.
Henderson said the team continues to grow and expects to perform stronger as the season progresses.
Moving all the way from Australia, freshman Sarah Bull said she has adapted quickly to life in the U.S., finding a new team that feels like family.
“I mean, I get to be close to the beach like I am at home,” Bull said. “I get to do my swimming like I am at home. The only difference is I don’t have my friends and family from home, but I’ve made my own family here, which has been amazing.”
UTRGV Swimming and Diving capped off the fall semester with a showing at the NW Collegiate Invite Nov. 21 to 23, where it finished sixth overall.
Bull led the team with two fifth-place swims and a new record in the 200 butterfly, while Henderson set another program record in the 100 freestyle.
The Vaqueros will hit the pool again for a meet against New Mexico State Jan. 10 at home.
