The Counseling Center at UTRGV promotes personal growth and provides free professional services for students struggling with mental health concerns. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the services provided by the Counseling Center have all transitioned online using Zoom services.
The Counseling Center website states that “therapists help by listening and discussing issues without judgment.” Clinical Therapist for the Counseling Center at UTRGV, Maria Alejandra Mazariegos says their mission is to support students in the journey.
So really our departments focus and mission is to support students in that journey, because we believe mental health is such a critical aspect of student success…
Mazariegos says some of the services provided at the Counseling Center are individual and couple psychotherapy, group therapy, and support groups, as well as a 24/7 Confidential Crisis Line for Vaqueros who seek emotional support.
The Counseling Center’s website states that information shared with the therapist during appointments or sessions is protected by confidentiality laws and guidelines. Biomedical Sciences Junior, Adriana Alejandra Ávila says the Counseling Center does an important job.
[The] Counseling Center does a very important job in helping students overcome their problems, and as I know many people who do not know how to manage their stress and anxiety, and counseling center does a job to help those students…
Mazariegos says when a student seeks aid of the Counseling Center they begin with a screening session that lasts around 30 minutes. The screening session helps the therapist determine which is the best course of treatment for the student’s needs. Nursing Junior, Ana Guerrero says this is a great opportunity for those that do not have healthcare.
I think this is a great opportunity for our UTRGV community, especially because not a lot of our people in our community have this healthcare…
