Baseball (2-4) record as of 8:30 p.m. Sunday
- Feb. 21 afternoon 7-12 defeat vs. Baylor
In a homerun bonanza to open up the 2021 season, the Vaqueros couldn’t keep pace with the Bears long bombs, 2-4.
Graduate shortstop Christian Sepulveda in three at bats recorded two runs, two hits, four RBI and a homerun out to leftfield.
- Feb. 21 evening 9-8 victory vs. Baylor
Despite trailing the Bear 0-8 headed into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Vaqueros rallied back as freshman outfielder Spencer Serven in five at-bats finished with two runs, three hits, four RBI and a homerun.
Junior pitcher Deryk Serbantez in two innings in relief struck out four to earn the victory.
- Monday afternoon 7-4 victory vs. Baylor
The Vaqueros earned their first series sweep over a Big 12 opponent since 2000 when they swept Texas Tech.
Sophomore pitcher Colten Davis, in 3.2 innings of relief, earned the win and senior pitcher Chase Bridges earned the save with a scoreless ninth inning.
- Friday night 3-10 defeat vs. Washington in Seattle
In a game that was paused on Friday and finished on Saturday morning due to a rain delay, the Vaqueros all three runs came in the fifth inning as graduate infielder Christian Sepulveda doubled to left field. That was followed by a freshman Spencer Serven triple to left center that drove in Sepulveda that was followed by a junior catcher RJ Ochoa double that drove in Serven.
Starting pitcher, junior Christian Ramos ended with the loss after giving up eight hits, six runs, three earned in three innings of action.
- Saturday night 2-3 defeat in seven innings vs. Washington in Seattle
In a game that was rescheduled to seven innings because of Friday night’s rain delay, senior pitcher Kevin Stevens’ six inning, six strikeout performance wasn’t enough as he gave up three earned runs on six hits and one walk.
The two runs for the Vaqueros came in the fifth inning when graduate outfielder Elijah Alexander hit a double to center field and junior catcher RJ Ochoa singled to center.
- Sunday night 0-6 defeat vs. Washington in Seattle
The Huskies scored early and often off of Vaqueros starting graduate pitcher Kevin Palm who threw four innings and allowed 5 hits and runs; all earned and struck out three.
Although the Vaqueros were kept off the scoreboard, sophomore infielder Diego Ramirez went 2-4 on the night.
Men’s Basketball (9-6, 2-2)
- Friday night 74-78 defeat vs. Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah
In the first WAC game since their Jan.16 victory over Dixie State, the Vaqueros fell to the Wolverines as they surrendered a lead at the 6:10 mark in the first half which they would never recover from.
Senior guard Javon Levi filled up the stat sheet and finished with eight points, six rebounds, eight assists and seven steals. He now holds the career program-record in steals with 236 and moved into sixth place all-time in the WAC, passing Greedy Daniels’ 233 and Kevin Scarborough’s 235.
- Saturday night 64-73 defeat vs. Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah
The Vaqueros for the first time this season dropped back-to-back games as the Wolverines earned the season sweep.
Junior guard Uche Dibiamaka led all scorers with career-high 17 points on 7-13 shooting from the field and 2-4 from deep.
Women’s Basketball (5-12, 1-7)
- Friday night 54-62 defeat vs. Utah Valley University
A bad shooting night did the Vaqueros in as they only hit 35% from the field and 33% from deep as only graduate guard Amara Graham and sophomore guard Jena’ Williams shot over 40% for the game.
Graham finished with a game-high 24 points to go along with three rebounds and two steals.
- Saturday evening 50-53 defeat vs. Utah Valley University
Despite holding the lead for the majority of the game, the Vaqueros were not able to earn the victory in the final home game of the regular season.
After the game, UTRGV Head Coach Lane Lord had strong words for the officials as the Vaqueros did not go the free throw line once compared to 15 trips for the Wolverines.
Graduate guard Amara Graham in her final home game at the Fieldhouse, recorded eight points, five rebounds and four assists.
Men’s Cross Country
- Fourth place finish out of eight at the WAC Championships in Seattle
As a team, the Vaqueros finished in fourth with 126 points, 34 points behind third place Grand Canyon University and 21 points ahead of fifth place Dixie State.
In a field of 61 runners, the highest finishing Vaquero was junior Abraham Chirchir who came in 20th with a 8K time of 25:35:10.
Women’s Cross Country
- Fifth place finish out of six at the WAC Championships in Seattle
As a team, the Vaqueros finished in fifth place with 134 points, 15 points behind fourth place Grand Canyon University and 15 points ahead of last place Dixie State.
Freshman Samantha Gonzalez finished in 17th with a personal record time of 22:33:60 in her 6K run.
Women’s Golf
- Seventh place finish out of 11 at the Islander Classic in Corpus Christi
In the Vaqueros second tournament of the year, the team finished in seventh place with a three-round team score of 948, two strokes behind sixth place Ball State and 26 strokes ahead of eight place Stephen F. Austin.
Sophomore Julie Lucio was the highest placing Vaquero, tied for fifth with a three-round score of 226 going for a 77 in round one and posting 75 and 74 in rounds two and three, respectively.
Men’s Soccer (1-1-0, 1-1-0)
- Wednesday night double overtime 0-0 draw against California Baptist University in Irvine, California
The Vaqueros returned to the pitch after an 18-day hiatus and played to a scoreless draw against the Lancers despite having nearly identical shots, 12-13, and shots on goal, 4-6.
Junior goalkeeper Trevor Schneider recorded his second clean sheet of the season with six saves.
Women’s Soccer (4-1-2, 1-1-1)
- Monday afternoon 0-1 defeat vs. Seattle U
The Vaqueros fell on an 80th minute free kick goal from Redhawks junior defender Natalie Dixon and recorded their first loss of the season.
- Thursday night 2-0 victory vs. Chicago State
The Vaqueros picked up their first home win of the season with two spectacular goals from midfielders Madeline Von Moeller in the 7th minute and senior Gina Steiner in the 18th.
Goalkeepers junior Maile Lunardi, who finished with three saves, and freshman Macie Blohowiak, who subbed in at the 68th minute, would combine for the Vaqueros fourth clean sheet of the season.
Men’s Tennis (3-8) record as of 9 p.m. Sunday
- Saturday afternoon 0-4 defeat vs. Rice in Houston
The Vaqueros failed to record a single point on the day as the Owls earned two wins in doubles with the third match went unfinished.
In singles, the Owls took wins on court No. 1, 2 and 6 to clinch the victory as the other three matches went unfinished.
- Sunday night 0-7 defeat vs. No. 10 Texas A&M in College Station
The Aggies earned the opening point of the match as they won on court No. 2 and 3 in doubles.
In singles, the Aggies swept the Vaqueros to clinch the victory.
Women’s Tennis (1-7)
- Tuesday evening 0-7 defeat vs. Texas A&M Corpus Christi in Corpus Christi
After the Vaqueros had three matchdays canceled due to Winter Storm Uri, they returned to the court to play against the Islanders in the South Texas Showdown.
The Vaqueros were swept in their doubles. In singles, freshman Isabelle Bahr on court No. 1 and sophomore Katarina Sasaroga on court No. 6 took their matches to the third set before ultimately falling. The Islanders would sweep in singles as well.
- Saturday afternoon 2-5 defeat vs. Texas A&M Kingsville in Kingsville
In the first match of the doubleheader, the Vaqueros were able to clinch a point in doubles as partners sophomore Katarina Sasaroga and freshman Isabelle Bahr and freshman duo Valeria Montero and Lea Karren earned 6-1 and 6-2 wins, respectively.
In singles, the lone victory for the Vaqueros came on court No. 6 as Karren beat (6-2-, 6-1) freshman Jana Knabb but the Javelinas won on courts No. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 to take the matchday.
- Saturday evening 4-0 victory vs. Texas A&M Kingsville in Kingsville
The Vaqueros secured their first win of the season as they swept the Javelinas in doubles and earned wins on court No. 3, 5 and 6 with sophomore Ana Platisa, sophomore Katarina Sasaroga and freshman Lea Karren.
Once the Vaqueros sealed the victory the other matches went unfinished.
Volleyball (0-8, 0-6)
- Monday night 0-3 defeat vs. Grand Canyon University in Phoenix
The Vaqueros in their first action since Feb. 9 and first road game since Feb. 2, fell in straight sets (11-25, 19-25, 22-25).
Senior outside hitter Samaret Caraballo had a team-high 13 kills and 12 digs.
- Tuesday evening 0-3 defeat vs. Grand Canyon University in Phoenix
The Vaqueros dropped their third WAC series of the season in straight sets (19-25, 23-25, 15-25) against the Antelopes as they remain winless in the 2021 campaign.
Freshman outside hitter Ada Bulgur recorded a game-high 12 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Victoire Nama and senior setter Debora Nazario both accounted for 11 digs.
