UTRGV hosts the first game after 51 years against Texas Longhorns with the final score of seven Texas Longhorns two University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros this past Tuesday, 26.
The last time UTRGV hosted a game against Texas was in the Broncs’ College World Series season of 1971.
Following an evening of storms and a morning stuffed up with rain set the game’s status up in the air, UTRGV athletics brought a covering for the time being to fend the downpour off before a helicopter was also brought to assist with drying the field at 3:50 p.m., over two hours before game time.
UTRGV Baseball Stadium, in front of a single-game program, records an over-capacity crowd of 6,418.
This is the largest known crowd to see a UTRGV baseball game against Texas since 1999, with the previous high-water mark being 5,989 for the matchup in Austin this past April 5.
Fans were all over the place: seats, suites, standing, closely following, and remaining external the arena’s outfield fence to watch the Cowboys and Longhorns in real lifelines from 5 p.m. to wrap up on the two sides of UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Freshman Isaac Lopez scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, and graduate student Cameron Blake walked, setting up an RBI single by junior Diego Ramirez to score 5-1.
Lopez, I scored on a wild pitch one in the bottom of the ninth to put the Vaqueros 7-2.
The Vaqueros will be back in action against the UTSA San Antonio this Tuesday at 6:00 at the U Alamo dome.
