UTRGV Head football coach speaks during a press conference about the addition of 41 players to the inaugural football roster.
Football season for UTRGV is getting much closer to becoming a reality after head coach Travis Bush announced Wednesday the addition of 41 players to the inaugural football roster.
Ten players were signed to the team Dec. 20, making the total for the team 51 athletes as of last week.
A UTRGV Athletics Feb. 7. news release states more new players will be added to the roster in the upcoming weeks for the 2025 football season.
Bush says in all of his years of experience at the collegiate level, he has never signed more than 12 to 15 athletes a year. He adds building a football team from scratch has provided him the best signing period of his career.
“It’s good because again we’ve started from nothing,” Bush said. “Didn’t have recruiting services. We did it old-school style. The four of us went to 600 high schools, watched kids and found kids and to see guys we found back in April of last year, we liked them from the get go.”
Bush says the foundation of the team will be built on mental toughness and great work ethic.
“You learn to win on a daily basis in that way,” he said. “You know, we talk about winning today and everything we do in our program, and it’s just a mindset … waking up in a three-point stance every morning ready to attack and be the best at whatever you’re doing.”
Vice President and Director of Athletics Chasse Conque says it has taken time to properly prepare the football program. An example being the new Vaqueros Performance Center, which is set to open in Fall 2025.
“We’ve been blessed with wonderful portable, temporary solutions,” Conque said. “We wanted to make sure that when we kicked off that our young men, this recruiting class, that we were able to look them in the eye and say, ‘This is how we’re going to live for the practice year, but this is going to be your your digs when we when we kick off in 25.’”
