Lita Leo and RGV College Democrats at the Health Affairs Building on the Edinburg campus
The RGV College Democrats hosted “Meet the Hidalgo County Treasurer: Lita Leo” last Wednesday, on the Edinburg campus.
The event gave students a chance to learn more about the responsibilities of the County Treasurer’s Office and how it manages public funds.
Lita Leo, the Hidalgo County Treasurer, serves as the chief financial officer oversees the county’s.
Leo said one of her goals was to increase public understanding of her office.
“Just more of an understanding county treasurer’s office because in general, the general public doesn’t really know a lot about this position. So they can take that away and turn around and tell people about it’s like oh I know who that is. I know what they do,” Leo said.
Organizers said the event was part of a broader effort to promote civic engagement and political awareness among college students.
RGV College Democrats aims to foster political awareness and encourage student involvement in local and national issues.
Alex Martinez, former president of the organization, said educating voters is key to civic participation.
“Obviously, civic engagement requires informing voters, and what not on who they’re voting for who the person is and what they do, so that’s basically what we’re doing. Is spreading the word,” Martinez said.
Students in attendance were also able to ask questions about how taxpayer dollars are invested and how the county generates revenue.
Robbie Juarez, chief of staff for the RGV College Democrats, said he was particularly interested in learning more about county investments.
“I was interested in asking about the investment and what they do with the tax money that we pay,” Juarez said.
Organizers say events like this help bridge the gap between students and local government leaders while encouraging informed participation in the democratic process.
