The Vaqueros claimed a 1-0 victory against the Houston Christian Huskies Thursday at home, shutting down a late offensive surge to come out on top.
As of Friday, UTRGV had a 5-3-4 overall record and 1-0-3 in conference play.
The Vaqueros took on Stephen F. Austin Sunday. Results are available at goutrgv.com.
The women’s soccer team began the first half strong, with freshman goalkeeper Kamila Aguilar tallying a save after a shot from Huskie sophomore forward Lia Bonet.
Each team applied ample pressure on each other but neither were able to find the end of the net, ultimately finishing the first half scoreless.
In the opening minutes of the second half, UTRGV junior midfielder Savannah Frisby, after a corner-kick assist from fellow sophomore defender Rosie Train, scored a header to put the Vaqueros in the lead against the Huskies.
UTRGV head coach Mark Foster explained his thoughts on the game.
“I thought we were defending well,” Foster said. “[I] thought we were attacking well. There were a couple of moments where I was like, ‘Is this gonna be another draw?’ Where we shoot a wall and then we got the goal at the end.”
The Huskies pressed offensively in the closing minutes, but the Vaqueros remained resilient and kept them from scoring, securing the win.
Frisby shared her thoughts on the game.
“I think we made history, like, I’m really excited it’s our first win in the first conference,” she said. “I don’t necessarily feel the pressure. I just feel hungry for more. … I feel like I just want to keep winning and keep pushing and I think the other girls feel the same way.”
The Vaqueros outshot the Huskies 8 to 6. HCU is now 3-7-3 overall and 1-2-1 in conference.
The UTRGV Women’s Soccer Team will go head to head in conference play against the Incarnate Word University Cardinals at 7 p.m. Friday in San Antonio.
