According to the Oscars official website, the Academy Awards were hosted in the Dolby Theater at Ovation Hollywood on Sunday, March 27, 2022, and it was transmitted live to more than 200 countries.
There are 23 categories in which an Oscar nominee could win an Academy Award; some include Best Actor in a Leading Role, Writing in Original Screenplay, Best Picture, and Costume Design.
During the ACB broadcast, actress Jessica Chastain was nominated and won “Actress in a Leading Role” for the film “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”, making it her first Academy Award and third nomination.
Jennifer Saxton, a costume design professor at UTRGV, talks about how she stands behind the decision of “Cruella”, the Disney Production Film, winning the Academy Award for best Costume Design.
“Cruella was really interesting and fun and arty and kind of accessible to audiences of many ages. I thought it was a really good design..”
Saxton later compares all the components in a film that work together to make the production successful with a functioning human body.
“So it’s just like the system of a body, if the heart doesn’t work, then the system fails. If we are doing it right, we are supporting each other and trusting each other and communicating and, so it is all important.”
But no one could help talking about the incident that occured on stage during the Oscars live broadcasting. After comedian Chris Rock made a controversial joke about the Academy Award Winner for Actor in a Leading Role Will Smith’s wife, the actor proceeded to stand up from his chair, climb on stage and slap Rock. What seemed like a harmless and staged bit caused the broadcasting to cut the sound a few seconds later.
UTRGV screenwriting professor David Carren said, “Well, at first I thought, “this is a very odd staged moment”, because when Smith was walking away, he was smiling. Then I realized when they cut the sound off that it was nothing like that.”
Will Smith later apologized to the academy during his acceptance speech and apologized to Chris Rock via Instagram, saying, “I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be.”
To conclude the ceremony, a slide show memorial was transmitted honoring the people who had passed away in the past year, who worked for the film industry. People such as Richard Donner, best known for directing “the classic” movie “The Goonies”, actress Betty White, and Mexican Actress Carmen Salinas.
